Remote Solutions

Jim,

We use Metaframe to do what you are asking. We have a TS w/ Metaframe in
Texas. Users in our Wisconsin office connect to Vantage through the TS. With
Metaframe our Wisconsin users can print to their local printer in Wisconsin,
or a network printer. If you have a box w/ Metaframe on it, it's worth
taking a look at. It works for us, and a lot of other companies as well.

Hope this helps.

Speaking of remote printing, that is something I about to try and solve.
I have NT Terminal Server running from our Baltimore to Florida locations.
The screen redraw performance is fine. My question is how to have a user in
Baltimore print to a printer in Baltimore while working from the Florida
terminal server. I printed off a one page sheet from Microsoft's web sheet
but it was cryptic at best. I do have Metafram sitting in a box that has
never been implemented. Just curious what the rest of you all have been
doing. Thanks.

We are using windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server edition for remote users to
connect to Vantage. We have about 10 remote users at our Chicago facility,
but only 1-3 are usually connected at one time. We have a 1/4 T1 line
connection from Chicago to Massachusetts. for the most part, the solution
has worked well for us, although there have been some problems. For one,
without Citrix metaframe, the remote printing has been accomplished through
workarounds which aren't the most stable. Sometimes, the printer just stops
showing up, for no apparent reason. Also, at times when the bandwidth is at
capacity, Vantage slows down to a crawl and sometimes user sessions will get
disconnected for no appertain reason. This happens anywhere from once a
week on a good week to several times a day on a bad day. We are trying to
determine if we need to increase our bandwidth or perhaps, pay the $5000 for
Citrix metaframe.

For the majority of the time, however, performance is about 75% that of our
main site and is certainly useable.

The total cost for the terminal server pc and licenses was about $4500.
Terminal server licenses are now included with windows 2000, however.
