Plant Shift Rotation

Can you assign people to shift A
Then every 2 weeks or so change the hours in

Then in Job > Master File > Shift Master

Just a thought.

Hi All,

We rotate our plant shifts every two weeks, and in our old system we
had the ability to change the employee's shift's in a batch mode.
After a call to tech support, I was told that Vantage 6.1 does not
have the ability to automate this functionality.
Tech Support has attached my call to a previous enhancement request,
but my hope of this enhancement request happening in my lifetime is
low. Therefore, does anyone have a script or other automated method
for changing the shift of 150+ employee's every two weeks.

Thanks,

Rob MacDonald

We don't use it but sounds like the perfect application for GroundControl. You could create sets of scripts for each rotation cycle then catch the new employees and other misses manually.

Thanks Todd,

I checked GroundControl out, it looks good. We currently use Windows
Scripting (VBScript) for automation.
Do you know if Vantage 6.1 can be controlled with VBScript like Excel and
Word can?

This could be a good application for writing to the Vantage DB with
Access via ODBC. You could link the EmpBasic Table and use update
queries to modify the shift codes for a group at a time. If you had
shift codes 1, 2, & 3 for example and you wanted to put everyone
currently on 1 to 2, 2 to 3, and 3 to 1, I would set up a 4th code as
a temporary place holder. Change all the 2's to 4's. Then change
all the 1's to 2's, then change all the 3's to 1's and finally all
the 4's to 3's. If you do the same rotation every 2 weeks you could
set up 4 update queries and run them all with 1 click using a macro.
Of course, you wouldn't want to do the editing while the system was
in use. If you proceed with this option test thoroughly on a test
database, which of course you would need to do with Ground Control as
well.

Thanks, Brian.

Your solution was actually my first thought as I already extract data from
Vantage through ODBC, but being new to Vantage I was afraid I would cause
data integrity errors (database triggers not firing) by not going through
the Vantage interface.

Is there a way to find out if the table and/or field have triggers attached?

Thanks,

I know of no way to find triggers and I would always urge caution on
doing this sort of thing. It seems to me that EmpBasic.Shift should
be very straight forward. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.
In general I think it should be pretty safe to change data in master
file tables if you stay away from the index fields. There are
definately a lot of fields and tables I wouldn't try this sort of
think with.

I will reiterate the importance of testing and recommend having no
one in the system when you do the writing.

If you do go ahead with this idea. Please report back on how it goes.
