OT: Safety stuff

They did the same thing to me 8 months ago. It sucks, and I hope you will get duly compensated for what they just threw at you.

I recommend working with your state OSHA officials in setting up an effective program. In VA they have "Voluntary OSHA Safety Audits" This means that the state-OSHA sets up a visit ahead of time with you. Anything they find you agree to fix within 30-60 days. There are no fines or penalties. If you fix everything they find wrong, they promise not to drop by for an unannouced visit in the next twelve months. Kind of like the mafia.

I actually contracted a safety consultant in addition. For about $3K we have a customized safety manual we handed out to all of our employees. In addition we received a tailored program that helps us get compliant ASAP. I recommend you steer away from the little 3-day "seminars" that are being peddled.

I also partnered with the local Red Cross for CPR AND First Aid training. All in all I did gain a lot of valuable knowledge and experience, but I am very happy to pass the torch on soon. (When I got the honor I made sure it was only for a year, and only to get the program going.)

Good luck!

This is a big one! A few years ago my boss tried to give this to me also
b/c at the time I was also doing HR stuff (medical / disability / etc.). I
attended a course on OSHA compliancy via American Safety training. Lucky
for me we hired someone to work in accounting who also took over all HR
duties so I didn't have to do this job, but I learned in that 2-day class
that there's a lot to it and it's all very important. If you're new to it,
you might want to check out American safety training website and a course if
you think you need it...

Our safety manual is 3 inches thick with procedures, we have dozens of
forms, if you are in the states BWC reporting is back breakings. Training
programs are enormously time consuming. If your management is just trying
to fill a spot without any teeth they are setting themselves up for serious
liability. Keep in mind YOU will have to explain things if one of your
employees is injured or killed in your plant. We only have 100 employees,
our safety program occupies a lot of every one's time.

Reminds me of DuPont, many years ago when they first started and their business was making explosives. They had a problem with plants blowing up. So they gave plant managers and their families free housing....IN the plant. Plant's stopped blowing up. As told by a DuPont Safety trainer. DuPont has some pretty good programs but not sure how $$$. Moral of the story was safety has to be "personal" which is why most companies setup safety committees made up of a cross section of employees. Regular audits by the committee with a manadated "minumum" number of "findings" or improvement suggestions also keep the focus on continuous improvement and makes it as proactive as possible. But management had better accept the cost of the time involved as being worth it.

Another suggestion...who are the corporate liability, workers comp and health insurers? They all have a stake and usually have safety programs for the asking.
