General "old post" etiquette?

I’m wondering what the preferred method is for asking a related question for an old post. I try to search when I can so the same question isn’t asked over and over, but usually I find almost the answer I need. When this happens should I start a new post? Or continue on the thread that was already started?

Start a new post, you can reference the original one if its relevant. You can post in the old thread if it is specific to that particular question and not a new / seemingly related question.
