Gateway Computers

Mike,

I've been using Compaq Prosignias for over 1 1/2 years. They have all
standard components and I have put off the shelf CD drives, Zip drives,
modems, network cards, video cards, and even generic SDRAM in them.
They come from the factory with video cards in a AGP slot, Intel Pro
10/100 network card in a PCI slot, and even a sound card in a slot! Try
to find an OEM that doesn't intergrate sound and video onto the
motherboard these days. Even Dell Optiplexs have ethernet on the
motherboard. Sorry, but I have to disagree with your Compaq statement,
at least for Prosignias. In my years doing this I've never found any
off the shelf component that was not compatible with almost any system
out there.

.<snip>..I have heard that Gateway is only compatible with Gateway. Is this
true? I am looking to install a R/W CDROM on a workstation. Do I have to
buy it from Gateway or can I buy it from another vendor?

Not true at all, Wendy. I've put lots of non-Gateway parts into Gateways
and they've behaved beautifully. Now, if you'd said Compaq, that would be
another story...
