FCC is about to break the internet as we know it

Given that a lot of the audience of this forum is technical, I figured it would be worth posting about this here.

The FCC, specifically the FCC Chair Ajit Pai (a former employer of Verizon) is on the verge of killing net neutrality and with it, the internet as we know it.

If the FCC passes their current proposal to repeal net neutrality it will effectively kill the internet as we know it and allow private companies such as ATT, Comcast, and Verizon to provide preferential treatment to certain companies on their internet ā€œpipesā€.

Think of a world where you can buy internet and get Yahoo but not Googleā€¦ or Netflix but not You-tubeā€¦ and the company you buy the internet from decides what you get and when you get it.

It is like Cable TV, where you get certain channels for a certain price and if you want ā€œHBOā€ you got to pay an extra 15 dollars a month. Small companies that cannot afford to pay ATT or Verizon for access will be pushed out and only those who can pay the ā€œtollā€ will be allowed to exist.

As a consumer you could find yourself in a situation where you canā€™t access a certain resource because it is not included in your ā€œpackageā€ and a lot of the free and wonderful resources on the internet could potentially cease to exist.

Companies can start discriminating on content that they donā€™t like and blocking access to material that they deem offensive or inappropriate.

Ajit Pai is so hell bent on passing this and making it stick, that he has ensured that the current provision they are trying to pass will even make it illegal for individual states and cities to pass their own versions of net neutrality. (So much for states rights eh?)

Anyways, enough ranting you can read more about it here

They got over 22 million commentsā€¦ and ignored most of them. So appealing to the FCC directly is a moot point :frowning: now congress is really our only option. They can over-rule the FCC if they pass a bill, or perhaps they can put pressure on them.

And if they decide to do that with YouTube, they would keep all $15 for themselves.

All you have to do is follow the money trail of the people responsible for this decision. It always comes down to just a few men/women; always no matter what the political system. Many of these politicians or government officials make a 100K ā€“ 150K salary but live like millionaires. Believe it or not they even have their own hush-hush fund establish with our tax money just in case you attempt to follow the money.
